Speed Group, one of Sweden’s largest third-party logistics (3PL) providers, has together with EAB created a new logistics facility in Falkenberg. The facility consolidates all external warehousing capacity for Carlsberg Sweden and is designed to handle more than 1.4 million pallets annually.

Previously, Carlsberg relied on several external warehousing and logistics solutions across Sweden. By consolidating operations into a single facility, the company has created a more optimised logistics setup with reduced transport distances and improved conditions for continued growth.

“The new facility covers approximately 40,000 square metres and is located close to production. In addition to delivering a building that met Carlsberg’s requirements, we were also able to provide a warehouse solution that accommodated the required number of pallet locations. That was absolutely crucial for the project,” says Johan Appelqvist, Business Development Manager Logistics at Speed Group.

For Speed Group, the project has placed high demands on storage capacity, automation and operational precision. At the same time, the solution needed to remain flexible enough to handle the variations typical of a business with strong seasonal flows.

High level of automation with Radioshuttle™ and Toyota

A key feature of the facility is its high degree of automation. In collaboration with Toyota Material Handling, EAB has delivered a warehouse solution where the majority of pallet locations are handled fully automatically using Radioshuttle™ systems and AGV trucks. Radioshuttle™ is a pallet handling system in which motorised shuttles move pallets within the racking structure. Combined with driverless trucks, the system increases storage density while significantly improving handling efficiency throughout the warehouse.

“This is an exciting project and one of the largest Radioshuttle™ installations we have carried out in Northern Europe. Radioshuttle™ combined with AGVs is unmatched when it comes to maximising storage capacity. A major strength of our solution is that we have delivered similar projects before—we know it works in practice, not just on paper,” says Jörgen Svensson, Sales and Project Manager at EAB Storage Equipment.

Tailored to the operation

Behind the completed facility lies extensive work analysing material flows, product ranges and storage requirements. For a business like Carlsberg, demand fluctuates throughout the year, placing particular demands on both capacity and flexibility.

The facility comprises nearly 79,000 pallet locations, of which approximately 50,900 are in Radioshuttle™ systems and around 28,000 in conventional pallet racking. In total, 30 Radioshuttle™ units have been installed, and together with automated trucks they create an efficient material flow throughout large parts of the warehouse.

“The goal has not only been to create as many pallet locations as possible. Just as important has been developing a facility that works in day-to-day operations and can handle both peak seasons and fluctuations in demand,” says Jörgen.

“We are very pleased to be working with several strong brands in this project. We have not previously delivered an automated logistics solution for pallets on this scale, but it feels very reassuring to have an experienced partner in EAB. Together we have created a logistics solution that gives Carlsberg both capacity and flexibility for the future,” adds Johan.

Unique goods flow handling

The flow of goods between storage and loading bays is managed by low-lift trucks that collect and deliver goods at the ends of the facility. This setup ensures a steady flow between inbound, storage and outbound operations while maximising the site’s capacity.

Another element of the project has been the development of customised charging stations for Radioshuttle™ units. In collaboration with Toyota Material Handling, EAB has designed a solution where charging stations are integrated into the racking system and adapted to meet the operation’s high requirements for availability and capacity.

In addition to the Radioshuttle™ installation, EAB has supplied pallet racking, protection systems and other storage equipment. Together, these components form a complete solution where racking, automation and material handling work in harmony to ensure high throughput and efficient operations.

Building for the future

The logistics industry is undergoing rapid transformation. The demands for efficiency, delivery precision and sustainable transport are increasing, while goods volumes continue to grow.

The new logistics facility in Falkenberg is an example of how modern warehouse logistics can meet these challenges. By combining high storage capacity with automated flows, it creates the conditions for a more efficient logistics solution—both today and in the future. Once fully operational, it will serve as the hub for Carlsberg’s external warehousing in Sweden and stand as a clear example of what is possible when experience, technology and long-term ambition come together.
